Christchurch on the Mead
Christchurch on the Mead has been a part of the Wally Foster Community Centre since the building opened in 1976. It was in partnership with the Church of England and Hackney Council that community and church dedicated themselves to serve the people of the Kings Mead Estate and surrounding streets, using the facilities of The Wally Foster Centre. Christchurch has a permanent chapel within the centre, and is thought to be the only existing chapel space within a local authority community centre in England
Christchurch prides itself on being a local church, serving local people, giving them the opportunity to be an integral part of the worshipping life of the church. It is part of the Anglican Parish of Hackney Marsh and works closely with St Barnabas church, Homerton High St and The Risen Christ and All Souls church in Overbury Street. Christchurch was the vision of the Rev John Pearce and started life as a small group of Christians meeting together in a flat on the Kings Mead Estate, As the congregation grew in number it moved into the Concorde Club on the Kings Mead Estate and then in 1976 into the newly built Wally Foster Centre.
