Hackney Marsh Team Ministry

Called to proclaim the good news in Hackney Marsh

Tom was born at a very early age in 1952. After suffering school for too many years he had an eclectic working life including catering, lorry driving, working in a laundry, stock controller/delivery driver in a factory, bar man and school caretaker until he ended up for many years in the building industry training first as a carpenter. After some years as a site manager Tom started his own business as a ‘one man band’ general builder. He ran this business for about ten years until he gave it up in 2008 to devote his time to ministry.

Tom was brought up by Quaker parents, he became a born again Christian at the age of eighteen and joined a Baptist church, later joining the Church of England in the early 1980’s. He was admitted and licensed as a Reader in 1986 to serve at St James the Less, Bethnal Green.

Tom’s ordination training was on the North Thames Ministerial Training Course and he was ordained Deacon in 1998 and Priested  the following year. Tom served as NSM curate at St Mark with St Paul’s, Old Ford for three years and then as NSM curate to the Hackney Marsh Team with special responsibility for All Souls during an interregnum of one year and then with special responsibility for Christ Church during an interregnum of six months. Tom was licensed as SSM (House for Duties) Team Vicar of All Souls on 4th March 2007.

Tom is married to Marcia and they have two grown up children. Tom enjoys narrow boat holidays, reading novels about medieval soldiers and derring do, and eating out. Tom particularly likes Church lunches etc. when the congregation brings curry goat and rice and peas, and he would happily live on Indian food. Tom used to run marathons, his best time was at Nottingham in 1994, 3hrs 59mins. But now he couldn’t run a bath!
